Where Does CBD Come From?
Although the world still has so much to learn about CBD, there’s never been a more exciting time for the hemp plant than right now. Wide-spread legalization and decriminalization is paving the way for true research into its magic. Soon, we can talk about hard science, but for now, we want to educate you about where CBD comes from. Once we cover that briefly, we’ll touch on why it seems to produce effects on the human body.
CBD Is One Of Many
Did you know that there are actually more than 100 cannabinoids in the hemp plant? CBD and its popular cousin, THC, are only two of multitudes. Just like THC had to make room for CBD in the conversation, the future likely holds secrets about many of the other compounds hemp creates.
But, we aren’t only waiting for the next superstar cannabinoid. Because of something called The Entourage Effect, each cannabinoid works conjunctively to increase hemp’s overall effects. This is why you hear so many people talking about full-spectrum hemp products.
The term full-spectrum means containing at least traces of all available cannabinoids. Full-spectrum products contain THC as well, it’s just in such minute amounts that you’ll never feel any intoxicating effects from CBD. THC levels are regulated by the government. You can see all of Skara’s stats on our website, by the way.
What Are Cannabinoids?
the hemp plant creates a number of organic compounds called cannabinoids. These substances have a unique ability to interact with human bodies and a number of other animals as well. The reason hemp compounds are so compatible with animals is that animals actually make very siilar substances already. the cannabinoid-like substances created by animals like us are called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids perform certain tasks and fall into a category called ‘ligands.’ They exert influence on molecules in the body and appear to have an overall regulating or enhancing effect.
To keep things simple, you’ll sometimes hear the term phytocannabinoids used to describe plant-made cannabinoids.
The system in our bodies that interacts with cannabinoids the most is called our Endocannabinoid System.
Where Does CBD Come From?
So now you know that plants like hemp make a number of cannabinoids, or compounds that can interact with animal bodies because our Endocannabinoid Systems are primed for the job. Hemp makes CBD as a part of its natural life cycle and we simply harvest it to use it for wellness.
We’re not exactly sure why plants like hemp make cannabinoids, but some evidence suggests these compounds help the plants protect themselves from things like UV light, toxins, and disease, and even to help ward off pests.
Even if a hard answer remains to be discovered, we know that hemp and cannabis plants (just a form of hemp) both make cannabinoids. Genetics plays a role in how much of each type is present in a particular plant.
How Is CBD Harvested?
We obtain CBD through extraction. there are several different extraction methods and some involve solvents that strip the cannabinoids from the plant matter. Conversely, other methods use things like CO2 to separate the cannabinoids from the hemp plant itself.
A product like our THC Free Harmonize is predominantly CBD. Although this is sometimes called an ‘isolate,’ Harmonize THC Free is actually a custom blend of CBD/CBN extracts, terpenes, plant essences, and rich plant oils.
On the other hand, our Full-Spectrum Harmonize contains more holistic hemp components. Because you are taking the plant holistically, you can enjoy the benefits of The Entourage Effect.
Which CBD Is the Best?
We can’t tell you which CBD is best. However, we can tell you that we recommend full-spectrum products to anyone looking to maximize their CBD experience. Because we believe that any CBD is beneficial, we still created an option for people who can’t have even minute, trace amounts of THC. There are all kinds of personal, valid reasons to make that decision. We want you to feel empowered to do what’s right for you.
